Double Self-Portrait

Double Self-Portrait

About the Project

Installation

Double Self-Portrait pairs images of German actresses from the 1930's with anti-Semitic caricatures of men reproduced in 18th-20th century French, German, Middle-Eastern and Soviet publications. The images of women are enlargements of collectable variety cards, found in German cigarette packages in the 1930's. Originally these cards were organized in different series with titles such as: A German Woman, A German City or A German Profile, reflecting the racist attitudes prevalent in German society and prefiguring emergence of National Socialism. The prints in Double Self-Portrait are framed under gilded glass mats and presented with the formal conventions of historical portraiture.
