Sweet Damsel of the Deep
About the Project
Installation
Sweet Damsel of the Deep excerpts E.C. Segar's Thimble Theater comic series Popeye from the 1930's. The print, eighteen inches high, stretches to a length of thirty-five feet in a continuous strip of horizontal frames. Stripped of images, the frames are reordered and recombined, but retain the original terse dialogue balloons. The texts touch on issues of class divisions, the misuse of political power, the struggles of artists, and failed ambition. Sweet Damsel of the Deep is a comedy of survival with a feminist heroine, which shares the common mishaps, unexpected moments, and strange collisions of daily life with Segar's rough and tumble original.
